The Port of New Orleans recently reached a notable safety milestone marking zero incidents reported for a six-month period — the Port’s lowest ever safety incident rate among its 250-plus employees.
Harbor Police Chief Robert S. Hecker will be honored during Global Maritime Ministries Global Fest virtual auction as the award recipient of the Rev. John P. Vandercook Service Award, which celebrates the Maritime Humanitarian of the Year.

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) launched a set of virtual reality videos designed to provide a rare inside look at the port’s terminals and cargo handling capabilities for customers, visitors and the general public.
Gov. John Bel Edwards announced a Louisiana smart port initiative that will streamline operations and improve safety through real-time data shared by port administrators, tenants, shippers, and warehouse, cargo and ground transportation providers. Louisiana Economic Development is coordinating the smart port initiative with The Water Institute of the Gulf and the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA).

Port NOLA and NOPB freight operations continue to operate normally. Our teams, and the entire maritime community, remain tremendously dedicated and diligent so commerce and supplies keep moving — while also taking precautionary steps to keep our workforce and community safe. Port NOLA and our terminal operators continue to follow recommended protocol at the terminals, including additional safety measures for essential crews, such as temperature screening, increased sanitation of equipment, the use of disinfectants at the docks and railroads, supplying masks to workers, and following recommended social distancing practices.

The Journal of Commerce (JOC) is thrilled to be back in New Orleans with a breakbulk and project cargo conference. We've been covering breakbulk cargo shipping since the JOC was founded by Samuel F.B. Morse as a New York City newspaper in 1827. Since those days, container shipping has changed and simplified how much of the world's general cargo travels, but breakbulk and project cargo still require special handling, equipment and a unique knowledge base.
The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) is continuing to focus on community relations as part of its Urban Rail Initiative. NOPB’s commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and helping those in need are cornerstones in its community outreach program.

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) held its first Maritime Career Info Session on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the Algiers Regional Library where more than 30 community members attended to learn about local maritime careers. The audience heard from Port staff, tenants and maritime industry representatives about regional job roles that are critical to the maritime industry.
